In celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month, Miniball presents Laura Lizcano and her quartet, featuring the music from her new album Daughter of the Sea. Written largely during quarantine, this collection of original songs is an internal look into Lizcano’s life, addressing a wide range of topics from breaking generational traumas and celebrating her immigrant identity, to expressing sexual desire and learning radical self-love. This presentation of the music from Daughter of the Sea features Lizcano on vocals, Gusten Rudolph on drums, Silas Irvine on piano, Joe Plowman on bass, and Jake Kelberman on guitar.
Laura is a Colombian-born jazz vocalist and composer. She is a graduate of Temple University’s Jazz Studies program, where she was a student of Joanna Pascale as well as the featured vocalist in the Temple University Big Band under the direction of Terell Stafford. As a performer and composer, Laura is influenced by artists like Norah Jones, Natalia Lafourcade and Caroline Shaw and through her original work, she aims to combine her background as a jazz vocalist with her love of folk, pop and contemporary classical music.
By presenting an evening of live original music from a group of exciting Philadelphia-based and Philadelphia-educated artists taking Jazz in new directions, this presentation of Daughter of the Sea will be a great compliment to the rest of the Philadelphia Celebrates Jazz programming, centering contemporary and evolving Jazz and its influence and fusion with autobiographical songwriting.
