The debut show is finally here! Thank you so much to everyone who has supported this vision and waited in line from the beginning
Today's set was a love letter to my community and the universe, from my friends, my "country of Philadelphia" and Vietnam, to my family.
Starting today, Vietnamese, Khmer, Haitian Creole, Cantonese, Fuzhounese, Mandarin, Tagalog, Rajasthani, Hindi/Urdu, Bangla, Kazakh, Uzbek, Yoruba, Lebanese and Egyptian Arabic, Spanish, Portuguese, French, and many more languages (vocally, not just instrumentally) will have a place on Philly’s airwaves.
We want to bring the world to Philly while acknowledging the world OF Philly. The many voices, cultures, sounds, and stories of our community deserve to be heard.
The marketing campaign is now live through WKDU’s Instagram. We hope the graphics and caption communicate the vision: a world where Gritty, Thỏ Bảy Màu, Kolah Ghermezi (کلاهقرمزی), Dr. Simi, Pat & Mat, Chhota Bheem (छोटा भीम), Hatsune Miku (初音ミク), and more can exist in the same sentence and maybe even bring us a little closer to world peace.
You also know I'm always waiting in line for grand openings, so today we talked about Sekela Kitchen's and Taste N Take's openings in Philly, including the significance of 2 grand openings within 6 days in Philly's Chinatown this month (Kyo Matcha and heytea).
Speaking of Philly, I'm really proud to have played some music from local artists and students from Philly. Scuemi is Philly’s pop star, and it's time for this new generation to have a pop star who is specifically from Philadelphia, not just Pennsylvania!
Earlier in the show, we took a moment to honor the life and memory of Charlie Sagerer, a fellow Drexel music industry student who passed away this week. Charlie cared deeply about music, and it was important to dedicate space in the show to remember him.
We also played a song by Aaliyah, since the anniversary of her death is coming up in a few days. She’s one of my favorite artists, so I had to include her in the debut show and take a moment to honor everything her music has meant to so many people, including me.
The first songs of the set were intentionally chosen for their uplifting messages and titles. We opened with “Ngôi Sao Hy Vọng,” meaning “Hopeful Star,” and closed with “Haneish,” meaning “We Will Live.”
We may be done waiting in line for the debut, but there are still more lines ahead. The mission from world peace to cultural connection and more never ends.
