Filipino-American guitarist/composer Karl Evangelista, the creative force behind boundary-breaking group Grex, ranks among a new wave of musicians pushing the traditions of jazz and experimental music into the 21st century. In this special multi-generational quintet, Evangelista is joined by legendary drummer Andrew Cyrille, West Coast free jazz icon Bobby Bradford, bassist Luke Stewart, and keyboardist Rei Scampavia for an evening of roving improvisations, freedom sounds, and electronically tinged modern compositions. The quintet will premiere “Taglish II,” a striking new piece that explores Filipino-American stories in an era of uncertainty and unrest. This occasion marks the first collaboration between Cyrille and Bradford in decades, reuniting two key voices from John Carter’s landmark Roots and Folklore series. Cyrille was a longtime member of the Cecil Taylor Unit who has collaborated with David Murray, Bill Frisell, Oliver Lake, Muhal Richard Abrams and countless others; while Bradford, 90, is an original member of the Ornette Coleman Quartet who recently lost his home in the California wildfires.
